Outranked

ONS and GQ Magazine

for high-competition keywords (90,500 monthly search volume) despite a lower domain authority.

The client situation

Re:signal created an evergreen inbound link asset for UK recruitment brand StandOut CV targeting the high-volume query “Average UK Salary” (90,500 monthly searches). By presenting clear, accessible salary insights at the top of the page and anticipating secondary user queries, the piece outranked major authorities like GQ and the Office for National Statistics (ONS), earning 233 backlinks without any active PR outreach.

The challenge

StandOut CV operated in a highly competitive UK recruitment market dominated by legacy authority domains such as Zety (DR 78) and Monster (DR 74). The client needed to establish sustained organic visibility and build passive editorial links without relying solely on active pitching.

Our approach

Interject directly into the journalist content-creation process by targeting high-demand search queries and building the ultimate citable resource for UK salary statistics.

  1. The Angle & Hook: We identified that top-ranking SERP competitors (including GQ) featured uninspiring walls of text and lacked visual hierarchy, creating a clear opportunity to win on user experience, clarity, and formatting.
  2. Campaign Execution: We placed core salary metrics in a scannable summary box at the very top of the page, allowing journalists and job seekers to extract key figures within five seconds. We then cascaded the content into logical secondary sections, including breakdowns by age, gender, profession, CEO pay, and full-time versus part-time employment.
  3. Methodology & Data Science: We synthesised official UK labor data into a clean, structured visual format. We committed to annual data updates to ensure the asset maintained freshness, relevancy, and search dominance year after year.

Our goals

Secure position-one rankings for high-volume keywords, capture passive inbound backlinks from media outlets, and drive consistent organic traffic.

The Results

Zero outreach emails were required. As the asset climbed organic search rankings, journalists naturally discovered and cited the page as a primary reference during their daily reporting.

The page built 233 linking root domains organically, securing citations from authoritative publications such as politics.co.uk, onrec.com, expatica.com, and studyinternational.com.

The asset delivered over 180,000 organic clicks and 7.08 million search impressions in a single year, maintaining over 10,000 visits per month. It outranked established high-DR competitors and government domains (including the Office for National Statistics) despite starting with a significantly lower domain authority (DR 48 vs DR 93).
