The clients situation

Re:signal partnered with US fintech company Self Financial to build brand authority and reach younger, budget-conscious consumers. By scraping and analysing TV streaming service catalogues using Python, the campaign calculated true “bang for buck” metrics across major platforms, generating over 170 backlinks across 19 countries over two consecutive years.

The challenge

Self Financial needed to expand brand visibility beyond specialized credit-building topics into mainstream consumer media. The objective was to connect with younger demographics facing everyday household budget decisions and subscription cost pressures.

Our approach

We deployed a multi-angle “octopus strategy”, constructing a data asset that appealed simultaneously to personal finance desks, technology editors, pop culture journalists, and platform fan bases.

  1. The Angle & Hook: We evaluated top streaming platforms (including Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max) based on cost-per-quality-hour, family-friendliness, $4K content availability, and genre breakdowns. We timed the initial launch around platform price hikes and major content releases, then refreshed the campaign in 2022 to align with the global cost-of-living crisis.
  2. Campaign Execution: The findings were presented through clear, scannable data visualisations breaking down library quality versus subscription price. By updating the asset annually, we maximised client ROI by reusing established data structures and targeting warm press contacts.
  3. Methodology & Data Science: When third-party aggregators declined to share datasets, we built a custom Python scraper to harvest IMDb listings, user ratings, and genre metadata across streaming libraries, ensuring an exclusive, citable dataset.

Our goals

Secure high-DR backlinks across technology and personal finance publications, expand international brand reach, and drive direct referral traffic.

The Results

The multi-hook structure allowed media outlets to cover the study from distinct angles. Tech publication The Streamable, for instance, ran three separate features focusing on different data points from the campaign.

The campaign generated 78 linking root domains in 2021 and 90+ linking root domains in 2022 (160+ total LRDs). Major coverage spanned 19 countries with features in Business Insider, TechRadar, Android Authority, The Motley Fool, 9to5Mac, BGR, Trusted Reviews, and Cheapism, alongside podcast features on Daring Fireball and Mac Observer.

The page accumulated nearly 36,000 pageviews and achieved organic page-one positions on Google for competitive search queries like “best streaming service”.
