The clients situation
Self Financial partnered with Re:signal to build topical authority and drive organic links around high-intent financial topics. By surveying 1,439 Americans on side-hustle trends and presenting the findings via search-optimized, accessible HTML charts, the evergreen asset bypassed active pitching to organically capture over 700 high-DR backlinks.
The challenge
Self needed to compete for high-demand “side hustle” search terms against established, high-authority media giants (such as USA Today and Business Insider) and niche authority domains without possessing equal domain authority.
Our approach
The strategy focused on interjecting directly into the journalist content-creation process by targeting existing search demand and positioning the client as a premier, citable data source.
- The Angle & Hook: Keyword research revealed massive search demand around side-hustle data, tapping into a clear need among personal finance journalists looking for fresh, citable statistics.
- Campaign Execution: The piece was structured with scannable key takeaways at the top and interactive charts built in clean HTML code, allowing search engines and journalists to easily parse and lift the data.
- Methodology & Data Science: A proprietary survey of 1,439 US respondents generated exclusive insights. To build immediate credibility, a transparent methodology section was added alongside Harvard-referenced links to authoritative secondary sources like the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Our goals
The primary target was to earn 20 high-quality, topically relevant backlinks aligned with Self Financial’s target audience.

The Results
By designing a high-ranking asset that naturally captured Google AI Overviews, journalists encountered the statistics directly within search results. This generated a continuous stream of passive inbound citations, removing the need for aggressive outbound pitching.
The asset generated 717 linking domains—exceeding the KPI by 697 links—at a final cost of just $8 per link. Coverage spanned flagship publications including Forbes, Shopify, Yahoo, Hostinger, AOL, Fit Small Business, and Go Banking Rates.
The page outranked significantly higher-authority publications like USA Today and Business Insider, captured featured AI Overview spots, and established an evergreen data asset that can be refreshed annually at minimal cost.
