Policy & Political Impact:
Prompted public review by the Louvre’s Director and an official announcement from French President Emmanuel Macron to re-house the Mona Lisa.

The clients situation
Root Digital (part of Re:signal) created a global Digital PR asset for discount platform CouponBirds to earn top-tier media coverage within the travel and experiences sector. By scraping and analyzing 18,176 reviews across the world’s 100 most famous artworks using Natural Language Processing (NLP), the study quantified the gap between expectation and reality in art tourism, generating over 500 links and shaping international political discourse.
The challenge
CouponBirds needed high-authority backlinks and mainstream media visibility in the travel and leisure space to support their affiliate brand partners, requiring a unique story capable of breaking through standard travel PR clutter.
Our approach
The strategy leveraged the viral “Paris Syndrome” concept, focusing on the universal tourist experience of artistic letdown to name and rank the world’s most underwhelming masterpieces.
- The Angle & Hook: By investigating whether iconic works—such as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Warhol—truly live up to the hype, the campaign gave journalists a fresh, provocative news story that deeply engaged readers.
- Campaign Execution: The study evaluated visitor sentiment across 100 top artworks, categorizing 1–3 star ratings as low and 4–5 star ratings as high, while factoring in museum entrance fees as supporting data.
- Methodology & Data Science:
- Scraping & Dataset: We scraped review platforms to isolate 18,176 target-specific reviews explicitly referencing famous artworks.
- Natural Language Processing (NLP): We applied NLP libraries to analyze emotional sentiment and evaluate the frequency of positive vs. negative terms.
- Mathematical Normalization: A linear normalization equation was implemented to standardize variables (scaling dataset ranges between -1 to 1, then adjusting values to a 0–2 scale) to ensure objective comparison across varied museum datasets.
Our goals
Earn authoritative, top-tier backlinks and global press mentions in travel, culture, and lifestyle publications.

The Results
Demonstrating the power of adaptive PR and persistence, the campaign grew slowly at first, sitting at 7 linking domains after two months. Breakthrough success occurred on the 7th week of outreach when The Guardian published a feature, triggering a massive global media snowball effect across international desks.
The campaign generated 510 linking root domains and 133 unlinked brand mentions across global outlets including Sky Italia, Capital FR, 20 Minutes, Elle, Yahoo, MSN, Xataka, Matador Network, and Italy 24.
Following the release of the data, the Director of the Louvre publicly acknowledged the study and confirmed the viewing experience was under official review. Eight months later, French President Emmanuel Macron officially announced that the Mona Lisa would be re-housed in a dedicated space to resolve visitor dissatisfaction.
